Gaia - the first topic the collective started working on,  developed from a talk given by  world renowned futurologist Alexander Mankowsky, who gave an insight into society's biggest current affairs - climate change and Gaia - the symbiotic planet.

Gaia is the idea that the world is a living ecosystem, a whole being that functions “ in the manner of a vast self-regulating organism, in the context of which all living things collectively define and maintain the conditions conducive for life on earth”. 

James Lovelock, an English scientist, first developed this theory back in 1974, and his ideas are now fairly universally accepted. The planet is a living being, and the air, earth, oceans, forests and people live and interact together. 

The present ecological crisis has arisen because people have neglected Gaia, and a new balance needs to be created. This is why an artistic and political response to Gaia is necessary today, and why ART2PEOPLE choose this important and complicated  topic for the first drop.  Thinking about sustainability in all of its forms, and in the world of digital art itself, raises political and aesthetic questions of a new dimension and  demands imagination and creativity.
